Etsy tags: the 13 slots and their rules

Every Etsy listing gets thirteen tags. They decide which searches your listing is even allowed to appear in. This page collects the rules Etsy publishes and enforces, the mistakes that waste a slot, and, just as important, what nobody can know about them.
The rules Etsy enforces
These are technical limits: the platform rejects or truncates anything beyond them. They are not up for debate.

A tag is not a word: it is a whole phrase. "carved lion clock" is one single tag, and that is how they should be thought about: buyers rarely type an isolated word.
The five mistakes that waste a slot
1. Leaving slots empty
This is the only mistake whose fix is mechanical: a listing with nine tags has locked itself out of four searches for nothing. Nothing to weigh up, nothing to measure: just fill them in.
2. Repeating the same tag
A duplicate eats one of the thirteen slots and adds nothing. Watch out for variants that aren't: upper and lower case are treated the same.
3. Using single-word tags
"lion" puts you up against millions of listings and says almost nothing about your product. Two- or three-word phrases are the ones that actually describe what you sell.
4. Copying a phrase from your title
A tag that repeats, word for word, a phrase already in your title brings no new word, and it takes one of thirteen slots. That's Albavo's reasoning, not an Etsy rule: Etsy says nothing about such tags. What Etsy has advised since August 2025 is a title under fifteen words that names the item first, with occasions and recipients in the tags or attributes. Keep your slots for those.
5. Writing tags in the wrong language
This is the least visible and most expensive mistake. A French tag and its English equivalent do not put you in the same queue: they are not two versions of one aisle, but two aisles of very different sizes:

These gaps don't mean you should avoid other languages: they mean a French tag and an English tag do different jobs. One puts you in front of few people in a small queue; the other in an enormous one. Both can be defended, as long as you know which one you're standing in.
What nobody can tell you about a tag
The exact number of searches for a tag is published nowhere. No tool can compute it from the outside: the ones showing a precise volume are showing an estimate, which they rarely call one.
How Etsy ranks two equally relevant listings is not published either, and will not be. No tag "guarantees" a position.
What is measurable, though, genuinely is: how many active listings carry a phrase, what the shops holding the top of the page use, what your own shop already shows. That's the subject of the page on Etsy SEO.

How many tags can an Etsy listing have?
Thirteen at most, and nothing forces you to fill them. Not filling them is exactly the most common mistake. Every empty slot is a search the listing doesn't take part in.
What is the maximum length of an Etsy tag?
Twenty characters, spaces included. Beyond that the tag is rejected. That's what keeps phrases down to two or three short words.
Should the same words appear in the title and in the tags?

Nobody can state that: Etsy publishes nothing about it. What is observable is the state before and after, which is why a dated history beats an impression.
