Etsy SEO: what can be measured, and what nobody knows
Updated 14 August 2026.
Etsy SEO is usually sold as a recipe. There isn't one: ranking is decided by Etsy, which publishes neither the formula nor the weights. Several things, however, genuinely are observable, and those are what let you decide. This page draws the line between the two.
What Etsy does publish
Etsy names the elements that feed its ranking: how well the query matches your listing's text (title, tags, categories, attributes), listing quality, recency, price and shipping cost, language and location, and the shop's track record. Those are ingredients, not weights.
Nobody outside Etsy knows the weight of each ingredient. A tool claiming otherwise isn't measuring, it's guessing. That's the difference between "your listing meets this rule" and "your listing will rank third".
What genuinely can be measured
How many active listings carry a phrase
This is the most solid fact available, and it is public: how many listings actually carry that phrase. It says nothing about demand, but it says exactly how many competitors you're up against. The same word changes nature entirely with language: "horloge murale" has 465 listings, "wall clock" 159,554.
What the shops at the top of the page carry
The tags of top-ranked listings are public. Counted per shop rather than per listing (a word repeated across one seller's entire catalogue is a house habit, not something competitors share), they reveal phrases everyone carries except you.
Who actually holds the first page
Two hundred thousand listings facing you, but a first page held by three sellers: those three are your real competition. Conversely, a page held by ten different shops is ground you can enter. The listing count alone cannot tell you which of the two you're looking at.
Whether new listings get through
How many listings on the first page are under a year old? That's the only observable proof Etsy is still ranking new arrivals there. Zero recent listings on a first page tells you more than any difficulty score.
The ranking as displayed, ads included
A listing's "natural" rank and what the buyer sees are two different things: sponsored slots push everyone down. Fifth in the ranking and ninth on screen is not the same page.
What is out of reach, and will stay there
- The exact search volume of a keyword. It is published nowhere outside Etsy's seller area, where it is capped at a handful of lookups per week and to a rolling thirty-day window. Any figure presented elsewhere as a volume is an estimate.
- The statistics of a shop that isn't yours (visits, search terms, conversion). They do not leave Etsy, and no permission opens them.
- Proof that a tag produced a sale. You can observe that a tag is common among those who rank; that's a correlation, never a demonstration.
Missing data should be shown as missing. That's the principle Albavo follows: when a figure doesn't exist it says "N/A", instead of a presentable estimate.
Three habits worth more than a recipe
- Fill all thirteen slots. It's the only purely mechanical gain: it depends on no estimate. See the page on Etsy tags.
- Date every measurement. The market moves; an undated figure means nothing, and two readings more than a month apart describe two different periods.
- Keep a history. Etsy only shows a rolling thirty days. Everything before that exists only if someone kept it, and it's the only way to see whether a change did anything.
Frequently asked
How does Etsy rank search results?
Etsy names the factors involved (text match, listing quality, recency, price and shipping, language, location, shop history) but publishes neither the formula nor the weight of each. No outside tool can reconstruct them.
Can you know how many people search a keyword on Etsy?
Not from outside. That figure exists only in Etsy's seller area, capped at a handful of lookups per week and a rolling thirty days. Precise volumes shown elsewhere are estimates.
How long before changing tags has an effect?
No duration is published, so there's no honest answer in days. What you can do is record the state before the change and compare later, which assumes you kept the earlier measurement, with its date.
Is it better to target a low-competition keyword?
Not automatically. A phrase with no competition is often a phrase nobody searches: sellers who rank don't spend a slot on a tag that returns nothing. Low competition is only a good sign if demand has been recorded separately.
Is Etsy SEO the same as Google SEO?
No. Etsy is an internal search engine with its own ranking and its own signals (shop history, shipping cost, buyer language), many of which have no equivalent on Google.
